Is 300 DPI Universally Required for KDP Cover (6 × 9 in front)?

While 300 DPI (1,838 × 2,775 px) is the standard benchmark for close-up handheld viewing, it is not universally mandatory for every printing project. The appropriate resolution depends on four key factors:

1. Viewing DistancePrints held at arm's length (12 in) benefit from 300 DPI, while wall prints viewed from 3–5 feet away look crisp at 150–200 DPI.
2. Physical Print SizeSmall frames require high pixel density, whereas large posters and signs require far lower DPI to appear sharp to the human eye.
3. Print Method & SubstrateGlossy photo paper and offset presses capture micro-detail, while textured canvas, matte watercolor paper, and textiles naturally mask lower DPI.
4. Printer & Provider SpecsBook publishers (e.g. Amazon KDP) mandate strict 300 DPI files in preflight, whereas sign and banner shops typically request 100–150 DPI.

Amazon KDP 300 DPI Requirements

Amazon KDP strictly requires all images intended for paperback and hardcover printing to have a resolution of at least 300 DPI. Any image below 200 DPI will trigger warnings or automated rejection during the KDP print previewer inspection.

Standard 6 × 9 Trade Paperback Dimensions

For a standard 6 × 9 inch book with 0.125" bleed, the front cover image must be at least 6.125 × 9.25 inches (1838 × 2775 pixels at 300 DPI). Interior full-page illustrations with bleed require the same 1838 × 2775 px resolution.

Frequently Asked Questions

KDP measures the effective DPI of your image at the physical dimensions it occupies on the printed page. If an image is stretched across a full page, it must have at least 300 pixels per inch of printed space.
