How to Resize a JPG Without Losing Too Much Quality

When resizing JPG images, image quality depends on whether you are reducing or enlarging pixel dimensions, as well as the JPEG encoding quality:

• Downsizing: Reducing the pixel dimensions of a large JPG usually preserves good visual quality when the output is not made excessively small.

• Upscaling: Increasing the pixel dimensions cannot recreate detail that was not present in the original image and may make the image look softer.

• Lossy Encoding: JPG is a lossy format, so saving an image again as JPEG can introduce additional compression depending on the quality setting.

• Quality Setting: The quality slider controls JPEG encoding quality when the output is JPG. While 85% is a useful starting point, there is no single quality value that is best for every image.

Resizing JPG Dimensions vs. Compressing File Size

Resizing changes the image's pixel dimensions, such as changing 4000 × 3000 pixels to 1920 × 1440 pixels. Compression reduces the file size in KB or MB, while the pixel dimensions can remain unchanged.

• Use resizing when the image dimensions are larger than needed for your display, presentation, or layout.

• Use compression when the pixel dimensions are appropriate but the file is too large for a website, upload form, or other limit. In those cases, use our dedicated compress JPG or image compressor tools.

• Sometimes both are useful together.

If you are preparing JPG photos for physical print, check your target dimensions with our image print size calculator or convert JPG to 300 DPI.
