How the DPI Converter Works
PrintReady provides two conversion methods:
1. Metadata Mode: Keeps your existing pixels 100% untouched while updating the embedded print resolution header (JFIF APP0 for JPEG, pHYs chunk for PNG) to 300 DPI for print preflight compliance.
2. Resize Mode: Calculates the exact required pixel dimensions for a desired physical print size (e.g. 8 × 10 in at 300 DPI = 2400 × 3000 px) and resamples the image in your browser.
Important: Does Changing DPI Add Image Detail?
No. Changing DPI metadata alone does NOT add image detail or pixels. For example, a 2400 × 3000 px image at 72 DPI contains exactly the same pixel data as a 2400 × 3000 px image at 300 DPI if only the metadata is changed. What changes is the physical print size interpretation by printing software.
Format Capabilities and Limitations
JPEG and PNG files standardly support physical resolution tags (JFIF and pHYs). In WebP files, the specification does not standardly define physical DPI header markers; print preflight reads WebP dimensions in raw pixels.
